GS1 Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) provides global standards for electronic business messaging that allow automation of business transactions commonly occurring across the supply chain. The GS1 EDI standards cover master data alignment, order and delivery and financial settlement management, as well as transport and warehouse management. By using EDI standards (GS1 EANCOM or GS1 XML), information can be communicated quickly, efficiently and accurately.
The GS1 EANCOM standard is a GS1 subset of the UN/EDIFACT standard (United Nations Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport). The standard contains only the message elements mandated by syntax and required by business applications. It integrates information shared electronically with the physical flow of trading goods. With the adoption of GS1 EANCOM standards, businesses get a ready-to-use UN/EDIFACT subset accepted globally, data quality, reduced errors and addition of components as per request.

It is a flexible, structured format used to organize and store data in a way that is both human-readable and machine-readable. It is one of the two standards recommended by GS1 for electronic business messaging. It does not replace the GS1 EANCOM standard but rather provides a set of technology standards to support the exchange of transactional data between trading partners.
